Elegant albums, DIY

Unless you're still snapping photos on that disc camera you got back in '86, you're probably aware of how digital technology has changed personal photography. It's now possible to shoot, edit and - most important - share your images online with family, friends (and MySpace stalkers) quickly and easily.

But 20 years from now, do you really see yourself cuddling up with the kids on the couch to page through your wedding album - on your laptop? Technology is nice and all, but it doesn't look particularly lovely sitting on the bookshelf.

Fortunately, online photo Web sites have moved far beyond just offering two-for-one prints. It's now possible, even easy, to turn out an artfully designed, beautifully bound photo book - or just about any other kind of book - yourself.

Last year, as her daughter Isabel's first birthday approached, Susan Lubking Kling found herself staring down the digitized mountain of snapshots she'd taken of her baby.

MWC08: Nokia announces four new S60 mobile devices

We were expecting some device announcements at Mobile World Congress from Nokia and the did not disappoint with the announcement of 4 new devices. They announced the Nokia 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator, N78, and N96. I had the opportunity to meet with various product managers to talk about the devices and also took several pictures and some video that will be posted later when I get some time away from the show floor.

The 6220 Classic is a very compact mobile phone designed for the person coming from a feature phone to the S60 platform who wants phone that excels in still photography since it has a Carl Zeiss 5-megapixel digital camera with a Xenon flash. It also has a GPS receiver and HSDPA support.

Another of the 6000 series announced was the 6210 Navigator that focuses on and provides a great GPS experience.

Taxi driver robbed in armed stickup

A taxi driver was robbed at gunpoint about 12:05 a.m. Jan. 19 as he responded to a call for service in the 100 block of 11th Street.

The driver arrived outside an apartment building and got out to see if there was a customer. A man nearby waved to him then approached, pulled out a handgun and held it to the driver's throat and demanded money.

The robber grabbed a bag out of the cab with $98 and ran away.

- A food deliveryman escaped being robbed about 9:40 p.m. Jan. 19 in the 900 block of Plaza Drive. The man was delivering to a home that turned out to be vacant. When he returned to his car and got in, a man with a handgun demanded his money. The delivery man rolled up his window, drove away and contacted police.

- A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with theft of a firearm following a traffic stop about 10:15 p.m.

Scandal tarnishes academy program

One of the midshipmen and two civilian women who say they were unwittingly videotaped have hired an attorney who said he will file a lawsuit, which would likely examine the academy's oversight of the vast program, as well as a number of dark episodes in its past.

Whatever the outcome of either case, both will highlight what critics said they believe has long been apparent: Some sponsors have too cozy a relationship with midshipmen and have become too permissive.

"The sponsor program started out as a great program, and it was originally very limited to when you could visit," said W. Minor Carter, a 1962 graduate and Annapolis resident. "Now, it's obvious that a lot of midshipmen are allowed free access to liquor and privacy with the opposite sex. While the thought of the sex tapes is horrific, the fact that a guy was openly providing an opportunity for midshipmen to have sex at his house is outrageous."

Academy officials admit that they don't have the funding or staffing to closely monitor what happens in sponsor homes.

Find your Digital Rebel's inner Holga

If you love the look of pictures taken with the Holga —those cheap, plastic cameras made in China—but don't want to deal with the oh-so-last-century idea of film, check out Holgamods' Holga Body Cap.

Randy Smith, the man behind Holgamods, has taken the lens off a stock Holga and grafted it onto a Canon body cap that fits all of the Canon D-SLRs, including the Digital Rebel series, the EOS 5D Digital, the new EOS 40D Digital, and even the top-of-the-line EOS-1Ds Mark III (it would probably fit any of the more modern Canon film cameras as well).

The result is pure plastic goodness without the darkroom. Like the Lensbaby (another of our favorite toys), the Holga Body Cap isn't an automatic lens. You'll need to shoot in manual mode, and set the shutter speed accordingly, but it's a lot of fun, and you end up those dreamy, variable-focus images that tell everyone you're just a little bit off-kilter.

Santa Monica

The City of Santa Monica is offering competitive landscape grants up to $20,000 to help property owners move away from landscaping that drains resources like water and petroleum, and pollutes, to a landscape that reduces such impacts and mimics native flora and fauna. To qualify for a grant, a landscaping plan must include water-efficient irrigation, plus one or more of the following — California native plants, water-efficient plants, storm-water management systems, "graywater" systems, and/or other innovative water-saving features.

Since 2005, local homeowners, apartment owners, businesses and schools have been awarded more than $400,000 in landscaping grants, city officials said.Applications for the current grant cycle will be accepted through March 27th. Applications are available at www.smepd .org/, or (866) 728-3229.

Reader Exchange: WWII vet seeking Legionnaire shirt

Jeanne Turner of New Port Richey is hoping a REXer will make a disabled World War II veteran, soon to be 83, very happy. He is a member of the American Legion and would like to participate in several services the Legion holds, but he needs to dress the part. That means he needs a white short-sleeved shirt, size 151/2, with the required emblems on collar and sleeves.

Jeanne asks if there is a Legionnaire out there who may have put on some weight and now can't button his shirt or who would be willing to give a fellow soldier that shirt off his back, so to speak. Jeanne may be reached at 727 846-8540.

Robin Elder of Largo needs help inlocating an organization to which she could donate a collection of Longaberger baskets. During the past few years Robin has collected a number of these baskets, all beautiful and in excellent condition.
